Make Up Geek: Palette a Week 2 & 100 Days of Makeup 12

Makeup Geek Palette: 100 Days of Makeup Week 2

Makeup Geek Haul

It arrived! I’d been toying with the idea of buying a custom Makeup Geek palette for quite a while, but never had the impetus to pull the trigger until last week’s experiment with using only a single palette at once. Although the Vice 4 has neutrals, if you read my mini-review, you’ll remember that I didn’t really like any of them and bemoaned the fact that more palettes aren’t made with good skin toned neutrals included, or if they do, they’re the same size as all of the other colors even though they tend to get more use. So I picked 3 neutrals (1 with shimmer), one metallic, one transition shade, and 4 pops of color to create what I think is a pretty stellar palette that gave me some colors I didn’t have and some light neutrals which I don’t have to feel guilty about using up outside of their palette since they are replaceable. So for week 2 of #100daysofmakeup I opted to use my new custom palette for the challenge(#paletteaweek).

My first Ipsy also arrived this week! I’ll be doing a separate post with my review of the products I received, but so far I’m a fan! I liked all except for one item (a nail polish in a color I just didn’t care for), but especially adored the Smashbox primer oil and the Chella lip pencil, which you’ll see in some of the looks from this week.

Week 2: Makeup Geek Custom Palette Mini-Review

I’d never ordered a custom palette, nor ordered from any kind of indie brand, but I was super please with the Makeup Geek palette I put together. All of the colors went on so smoothly and blended out really well in a way that some of my more expensive makeup never did. It’s not cheap exactly, but the ability to pick all of your colors rather than ending up with 5 that you love and 5 that you don’t in a 10 color palette is totally worth it. I opted for:

20160211_185603

Top to bottom, left to right: lemon drop, fuji, poppy, gold digger, peach smoothie, and chickadee, shimma shimma, rapunzel, and vanilla bean encased in the makeupgeek travel vault palette which is metallic, magnetic, and magnificent! A hand written card too! So pumped!

Best thing about the palette: The it was custom picked so I knew exactly what I was getting with each and every color.

Worst thing about the paletteVery small things. The case is described as rose gold – it isn’t. I know why there are spaces between the colors, but I really wish there were a way to make them flush and even in the case. Maybe some sort of indent or removable divider? It’s a small pet peeve and the case is nice otherwise, but it’s not cheap!

Favorite Shades: Um, all of them? I loved all of the colors of course and shimma shimma was fantastic as well.

Disappointing Shades: I know people rave about peach smoothie, it was my least favorite pick and almost skin color on me. Not bad for a transition shade, but I had expected a little bit more peach. Gold digger was likewise a bit lighter than I expected, although I still liked it, and out of the two base colors I got, vanilla bean was the one I might not re-buy. I liked it, but I find myself reaching for rapunzel more.

Make Up Geek Looks

This palette was super fun to work with, and although I often created similar looks (I actually had to switch some of the instagram and regular photos around because the yellow/green looks were so similar I mixed them up!) each and every one just came out so pretty. I wish I had the skill, tools, and lighting to capture just how pretty these colors are. It was really hard to move on after the week was over.

Face: Kat Von D Tattoo foundation in light 44. Highlight is mary‑lou manizer by theBalm, contour is hoola by Benefit, and blush I’m pretty sure I forgot!

Eye: Rapunzel and vanilla bean as a base, peach smoothie as a transition color in the crease, poppy in the crease up toward the brow, chickadee in the outer corner, gold digger on the lid, and lemon drop in the inner corner to create this beautiful sunset look with the Kat Von D tattoo liner in trooper.

Lip: Bare Minerals marvelous moxie in maverick. 💋

Comments:  I’m so impressed with these shadows so far. Great pigment, staying power, and blendability. Although not captured super well in this pick, this look had a sunset gradient look going on that I adored. It was hard not to keep trying to reproduce it, but the challenge is a different look every day, not perfecting the same one!

Face: Kat Von D Tattoo foundation in light 44. Highlight is mary‑lou manizer by theBalm, contour is hoola by Benefit. Not that you can see half of that in this photo. It was a bad day. You don’t want to see the rest, lol.

Eye: Rapunzel and vanilla bean as a base, peach smoothie as a transition color in the crease, chickadee in the crease, lemon drop and gold digger on the lid with the Kat Von D tattoo liner in trooper.

Comments: This is one of the few looks where I really didn’t take many photos. It wasn’t a great day and although my eye makeup was on point earlier in the day, by the time I got a chance to take pictures I looked and felt exhausted.

Lip: Mac Cosmetics lipstick in flat out fabulous. 💋

Comments: LOVED these shades together! I expected it to be a little wild/garish, but the colors just blended so nicely into each other that there was no chance of that. Absolutely lovely.

Lip: Chella Beauty lip pencil in passionate pink. 💋

Comments:  My most neutral look for the week. Also hair. What is going on hair? The lip color is really the star of this look. I got this lip pencil in my Ipsy and I adore it. The pigment was really pretty and the formula was super smooth and satiny. It was one of the first products I’ve tried where overdrawing my top lip really really worked. I’d be curious to try some of their other colors.

Comments:  This is the reverse of day 9 and, no surprise, it worked out just as beautifully, this time paired with a more subtle lip. I’m getting the hang of the bathroom lighting. It isn’t ideal of course, but I can make it work when I have to.

Comments: LOVE this whole look. I love how soft these photos came out both in expression and in coloring despite the obvious lighting issue. Car light is still best even when it’s half shadow apparently. I really love the colored crease/brow area with the lighter shimmery lid. It’s not something I’ve done a lot of, but I think I’ll be experimenting with it a lot more.

Lip: Studded kiss lipstick in archangel. 💋

Comments: Loved this last look especially with that red. My makeup was so on point, even my liner was behaving and I can almost never get that perfect curve. Like day 12 I love how soft these images look. Perfect face and hair days are not something I know how to achieve intentionally, but I can’t get enough of this look. What is it about these?

What did I Learn?

  1. Restraint & Smarter Buying: Restraining yourself from buying the next trendy palette and buying just what you need in singles is priceless! I must do more of this the next time a palette comes out where I see one or two colors I love which make me want to buy the full palette. Why not just get more of the color I want in a brand that is known for good singles?
  2. Lighting: This will likely be a recurring theme. Week 2 I think I did a lot better with my lighting. I stopped messing with filters and stuck to the places where I knew I could get a decent shot at least, if not a good one. Until I have a way to solve my lighting issue through other means, this is as good as it’s going to get I think. Any other advice from those who have been in my shoes?
  3. Neutral Lid: Sometimes neutral colors on the lid and brights in the crease/brow area are totally the way to go.
  4. Foundation: My foundation really doesn’t match. It’s a little too dark and a little too pink. This is disappointing since I’ve been matched twice, once the first time I got it and noticed that outside of summer-tan-time it wasn’t a good shade, and a second time when I went back to Sephora to get matched again telling them that the shade I’d been using was too dark and too pink. Not really sure how I ended up with the same problem. It’s not too bad, and I’m almost out so when I’m out all switch. I’ve been needing a new primer as well and might give the Makeup Forever primer and foundation a shot.

What about you?

  1. Any products that wowed or disappointed you?
  2. Does anyone else do Ipsy? Other boxes? What do you think?
  3. Any advice for me? Any advice I can give?

That’s it for today. Ta-ta!
